películarities – eclectic commentary by Grace Teng
About Me
Hello! I'm Grace Teng, aka pelicularities on the Internet. By day, I am a software engineer. I used to be an English teacher, and before that, I used to be a film student. These days, I create and teach in other ways.
This is my digital home base, a space where I share the things I love or am learning about. I call this space "eclectic commentary" for a reason: I have a wide range of interests, and enjoy synthesising my knowledge across multiple domains.
My great loves in life are video games, musical theatre and languages. I love getting lost in different worlds – whether travelling in different cities and cultures, hiking in the forest or in the mountains, or disappearing into role-playing games.
I currently live in Singapore, where I was born and raised. I went to college in New York City and spent a semester in Madrid, and love both cities still. I’ve also spent a lot of time in Freiburg im Breisgau, and have many happy memories of the city and the region. Someday, I hope to live and make my life in Vancouver, where my partner lives.
Software Engineering
In mid-2020, in the thick of the Covid pandemic, I decided I wanted to become a software engineer. I completed Le Wagon's web development bootcamp, and shortly after took on a traineeship position at Thoughtworks, which then turned into my first full-time software engineering role. I've since moved on from Thoughtworks, and now work at an investment bank on software development lifecycle tooling.
Most of my software engineering career so far has been characterised by boots-on-the-ground legacy modernisation work: taking an existing software system that still works but that has become a strategic liability, and re-tooling it to fit the organisation's ongoing tech strategy.
I'm very interested in computer systems, and enjoy into the nitty-gritty of how to make bits do cool things. One of the things I want to do on this site is to articulate my thoughts on building software, from my vantage point as a mid-level software engineer who's still honing her craft.
Education
I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's online Masters of Computer and Information Technology program, which I completed part-time from Spring 2021 to Summer 2024. Before that, I studied film and television production, Spanish, and linguistics at New York University.
